I met Smitty over 6 years ago and ran into him many times since. He always made me smile...the EMS and Fire crews in Temple are going to miss him, but I'm sure he is in a better place with all of his pain taken away. I'm sorry we couldn't have arrived sooner.

Smitty always found a way to make a joke or get a laugh out of us even though we were there to take care of him on the ambulance. He will be missed

I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet and know Smitty. He never failed to make me laugh whenever we would pick him up. There was not an employee at Scott and White EMS who didn't know Smitty. He was and will always be family. The first time I ever met him I called him sir and very quickly was corrected. Everytime after that he always warned me not to do it before I addressed him. No matter the situation he always had a smile on his face. He is missed.

To the family of Joseph "Smitty" I extend my most sincere condolences to you all. Our people, the folks of Temple FD, S&W EMS and ER want you to know that Joseph was cared for. We always knew him as Smitty. He could get a bit rowdy at times but at the end of the call we always left the hospital laughing with smiles on our faces. Smitty always referred to all of us as his "family", surrogate of course. Smitty no doubt had a hard life in Temple but I do think he knew that he did have a big extended family in all of us that knew him. May God wrap his big loving arms around you all and it is my most sincere hope that by reading the entries from all of us that you know that Joseph was not forgotten nor will he ever be.

My heart still hurts thinking of the loss of our beloved Smitty. I remember the first time I met him, it was 5 years ago when I was in EMT school. That day I didnít realize I would come to know and love seeing him on duty. Although he was a little awnry at times, Smitty was always full of great stories, a little vulgar, yet very respectful. Itís not often you come across people like him. I hope he knew we all truly cared for him. Rest In Peace Smitty
